FrSky S6R RX – Wing Setup How To

Eric/Warren, I hope this is some help to you.

Ill start by saying I am NOT an expert, its just that I have played around with this till I finally got it working the way I expected it to. Do I know if this is the right way – No!       hahahah
But I will say All of my Wings are flying Perfectly using this setup.

My Taranis has the following switch design for using the S6R:
SF = Throttle Cut
SA= Low, Med, High Rates
SB= Up is Stabilize Mode, Middle is OFF, and Down is Auto Level
S1= Pot to control intensity of Stabilize mode (when SB is in up position)

My radio is running Opentx 2.9 the last stable version before the release of Ver3.
I use OpenTx Companion 2.1 and to make things easier here is a link to a compressed copy of my S6R only Wings. You can open this beside your own radio models inside Companion and I believe just drag any one of my models to your radio.

Some Final Notes:

When in Auto Level, I set SA DOWN – this gives me Max Rates and makes it very easy to control the wing, even with AutoLevel active. Typically, for me, S1 is at about 20%, this seems to be enough for even moderate wind.
You MUST do the final setup of the RX – where you power the model, wait till its initialized, they Briefly press the bind button and MOVE ALL STICKS to their extents. (only needs to be done once)
If you don’t, your servo throw will be too small to successfully control the model.

If you look at my youtube channel at the recent video of the Wing Jet from World models, it is also using this exact setup. And if I did not crash that thing, this must be a good setup! hahahah

Scratch Builds

Have not been posting here in a while, weather is changing and not as many opportunities to fly, so don’t do as much building when I cant maiden (crash) the creations.

Here are a few over the last few weeks:

My rendition of the Balsa Plan called the wot4 or watt4. Scaled the drawing down to 45%. High wing but fully symmetrical so wanted to see what it can do. No rudder servo, 1540kv motor, 7×5 prop.

FrankenPlane: Wings are from a smashed Katana, elevator from a smashed Bravado, fuse and tail hot cut foam. Powered by a 36series 1500kv motor, should be interesting to see if it will fly!

Dwing Scratch

Roughly based on the dimensions found on a DeltaRay, I built this wing using old parts. Can you recognize anything…

Battery strap from destroyed Dogfighter

Nope… Did NOT Fly!

The Pitt-Tastic….

Ok, so I started with the plans from an old balsa FSW called the spintastic…. It was forward swept with a profile fuse and a rudder. This is an exceptionally odd design so thought I would try it.

However, once I had the wing built I noticed an old HK pitts biplane that I had badly smashed many months ago…

It had a partly intact fuse, no wings, busted elevator, and crushed motor shaft, and really should have just been scrapped.

Being over tired, using this pitts with the spintastic wing seemed like an awesome idea!

Sooo, I cut the fuse apart to take the FSW at midpoint, repaired the motor mount, elevator etc, and glued it all together!

I really need to stop building planes late at night!

Building the wing from 2″ pink insulation:

LAR Plank

Continuing with the flat plank style, here is a design with a fully symmetrical airfoil, and the LE cut at each corner to prevent tip stall.

Apparently the winglets are not required with the this cut, however, decided to play it safe.

Running an 1100kv motor and an 11″ prop, this design flies like a dream.

*Update – got caught in some wind, drove the plank into a building… this is No More!

LAR #4 Slo Wing

The Krazie Wing from an earlier build remains an interest, and since I had an armin style wing, with a slight dihedral, thought it may be worth the time to see if the krazie wing principle could transfer to this type of airfoil.

Powered by a sunnysky 750 spinning a 13×8 prop, it seem to have enough thrust to reach the moon! I’m using CG from the previous wing, however this feels extremely nose heavy. Will see if survives its first test flight!

Small Wing

Based on the FT designed $tree foamboard wing, this is a close design but built from Gray Depron, cover in laminate for strength, with no spars. Running a 3200 kv emax.

Flys extremely well! One thing I am learning with these wings is that elevens need a slight positive up angle, not coplanar with the wing. However, that in turn drives the craft up when under full throttle. To get around that, a normal mix should be created that drives elevens down when over 50% throttle is reached.
